Clare 's Story

Why do you create? I have always loved art and design and I love to make my ideas come to life on paper in the real world.
How do you work? I research and sketch some ideas first, when I decide which idea to move forward with, I develop my sketches further. I then plan which colours I will use on a mini painting. I then begin painting, I listen to music while painting for creative expression. I gradually build a painting up and tweak it until I'm happy with the final outcome.
Has your creative process changed over time, if so, how? Yes I am becoming more loose with my painting and subject style, often going for a more abstract conceptual style.
Do you consider yourself a full-time or part-time artist? A full-time artist, as I work as a graphic designer, I paint and create art such as sculptures and sketch several times a week and I continually upskill in art, design and painting courses to develop my skills further.
Besides creating, where else do you spend your time? I love tennis, spending time with friends, walking and being out in nature, swimming and trying new things.
What inspires you? Nature, people, conversations, everyday life, music, being around other creative people and learning about artists and design by attending design events.
What is the first piece of art you remember creating? I remember entering painting competitions in primary school and getting in to the finals in our county community competitions.
What does the term art mean to you? I see it as a means of expressing oneself or creatively expressing an idea, it can be a means of communicating a social message or something that brings a smile to someone's face. It makes people think and it brings joy to the viewer and the creator.
Name three artists that you respect? Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet.
What is your favourite piece of artwork? Starry Night, Van Gogh
What is your dream project? A portrait with a particular theme or angle in mind.
