The Artwork

Sat on the balcony over Regents canal, painting what I can see in the summer time.

The Artist

Why do you create? It makes me feel human
How do you work? I use pencil and pen when doing complex line drawings and colour them digitally on Photoshop, I take photographs of floors, walls, other surfaces in the places I visit collecting a library of textures and colours to use in this process. I paint using any items I get my hands on including forks and j-cloths as well as using more traditional brushes. I use old photographs, and other craft materials to make collages. Just about anything really. I like working with other people its a good way to generate ideas and get feedback.
Has your creative process changed over time, if so, how? Yes I am quicker to complete work now. Working on a graphic novel taught me about process, production line and strict deadlines. I have learnt ways to get better results by using tools to help! I used to spend a long time deciding on projects, working things out before I put pen to paper, now i think its important to start sketching and work it out as you go. I also collect lots of images for inspiration as a starting point and importantly ask as many people as possible for feedback.
Besides creating, where else do you spend your time? Potholing.
What inspires you? exhibitions, music, weather, light, photography, film, design and other people.
What is the first piece of art you remember creating? I drew a naked man for my Gran's fridge door
What does the term art mean to you? Making something that is not very useful in the practical sense. It is unique or beautiful or gives a different perspective, makes you question, makes you pause, makes you feel good, bad, queasy and / or inspired.
Name three artists that you respect? Rachel Ruysch, Agnes Martin, Swoon.
