17 LETTERS' Story

Why do you create? I started creating art as a hobby back when I finished High School. I loved the freedom I could have with it and the ability to lose myself in the process. I would spend hours on the floor in my parents garage painting, drawing, cutting and pasting and creating anything I could. I was beyond ecstatic when I found out that a career could be forged from my creative passions, which is what led me to become a Textile Designer, so now most of my work is in repeat for use in fabrics but I love the way a single motif looks as a piece of art.
How do you work? I like to start with diving into the current trends and deciphering through my research to establish what will be relevant for my end product and then I just let myself go and see what comes out! The computer is my main tool in my creative process however I do love to paint, sketch, collage and photograph which all gets compiled in photoshop, mostly late at night.
Has your creative process changed over time, if so, how? Yes, definitely. I studied textile design when computers weren't used so much and we used to hand paint our repeat tiles. It was a long and lengthy process but I am so happy I learnt that way. Now I use the computer to create effects that I can't get with a paintbrush, but there will always be a unique appeal of something that has been hand painted.
Do you consider yourself a full-time or part-time artist? I'd say part time at the moment, hoping and praying for it to be full time one day.
Besides creating, where else do you spend your time? I love spending time with my son and the man in my life taking trips down the coast and relaxing. Nothing beats a coffee at the beach on a rainy day!
What inspires you? Everything! Parks, nature, the sky, magazines, music, tv, my son, my boyfriend, my parents, my friends. Melbourne, travelling. I could go on!
What is the first piece of art you remember creating? It was an architectural diagram in high school. I don't know why I remember it because there were a heap of other pieces I did, but I can't remember any of them. This was a very clean, very precise piece that had a mathematical feel to it. I think i remember it because it was the first piece I created that didn't have texture or wasn't an abstract mess. Another avenue tapped into...
What does the term art mean to you? Something that makes you, you. A way to add your character to a space.
Name three artists that you respect? Frida Kahlo, Robert Rauschenberg, Mara Hoffman
What is your favourite piece of artwork? I don't think I have one...
What is your dream project? At this point in time, it would be to collaborate with Mara Hoffman on her new range :) Love her collections and prints. This will probably change soon though...
My dreams are changing rapidly.
