The Artwork

A modern minimalist photographic piece. A botanical artwork of a single Peace Lily shot against a black background.

The Artist

Why do you create? Creating has always been a part of me. I love all forms of art, it's escapism. I'm fascinated by the wonders of nature and I love being able to capture the intricate design in my photography. I'm drawn to beautiful detail and bold colours.
How do you work? My creative process usually involves wanting to capture something that's caught my eye or an idea that pops in to my head. I don't tend to go in search of subjects, they generally cross my path. I always shoot knowing that that's not the finished product. I'll shoot a subject in different light and angles and take to it with editing software and apps until I'm happy with the final result, which sometimes can take many goes. It's the editing process I enjoy most.
Has your creative process changed over time, if so, how? I think my process has improved over time, experimenting with different subjects and editing, but it's definitely gotten longer as I seem to be harder on myself wanting a better finished product.
Do you consider yourself a full-time or part-time artist? I would say I'm a full time artist. Creating is something that encompasses every part of my life. From my photography, my online stores, my day to day activities and with my children who love art as well.
Besides creating, where else do you spend your time? I'm a mother to three girls, so that keeps me busy. A guilty pleasure is photographing classic and vintage cars, so ducking off to car shows is a great way to spend some time!
What inspires you? It's a little cliche, but nature inspires me. The design and detail, the brilliant colours and the endless choices.
What is the first piece of art you remember creating? The first piece of art I remember creating would have to be those clay ashtrays you make in primary school! I guess that's an 80's thing.
What does the term art mean to you? Art means expressing yourself with whatever means or medium you have and creating something beautiful. It's a form of escapism and meditation.
Name three artists that you respect? Robert Mapplethorpe, Ansel Adams and Diane Arbus are three photographers I respect and whose work inspires me.
What is your favourite piece of artwork? I couldn't choose just one favourite as I adore all different types of art for different reasons, but Mapplethorpe's floral still life pieces are the bees knees!
What is your dream project? I can't say I have a dream project, but a simple dream would be to have a successful online art site.
